Final Project: Due Dec 14

Create an final project – a substantial feature story – for your blog. It should demonstrate what you have learned over the course of the semester and be the culmination of your blog coverage to date. Your primary goal is to tell a compelling, interactive story.

Final feature requirements:

  • story pitch must be approved by instructor
  • it must contain original reporting and research
  • presentation should take advantage of the unique qualities of the Web

Your first challenge is to come up with your story. It’s not just a topic or an idea. It should be a story.

Then you need to do original reporting. You must interview people, go places, find out information.

Then you want to think about the best possible way to tell your story. That will guide your presentation.

Some possible presentation options include…

1. PHOTO ESSAY

  • Pitch a relevant story that is best covered visually
  • Spend time photographing the subject
  • Gather full names, location, date info
  • Do research and interviews
  • Create a slide show with photos and text
  • Write up accompanying text to summarize your work

2. AUDIO STORY

  • Pitch a story that is best told with audio
  • Check out a digital recorder, mic, etc
  • Do reporting, interviews, and collect audio
  • Edit audio to no more than 5 minutes
  • Post as an .mp3 on your blog

Applications: Garageband or Audacity, SoundCloud, etc.

3. AUDIO SLIDE SHOW

  • Combine audio and photos to tell a multimedia story
  • Check out a digital recorder, mic, etc
  • Do reporting, interviews, and collect audio
  • Spend time photographing the subject
  • Edit audio and select photographs
  • Create a slide show with photos and audio

Applications: Slideshare.net, iMovie or Windows Video Editor

3. VIDEO STORY

  • Pitch a story that is best told with video
  • Shoot your video, conduct interviews, collect sequences
  • Edit your video to no longer than 5 minutes
  • Post to YouTube and to your blog

Applications: iMovie, Windows Movie Editor, etc

4. A FEATURE ARTICLE WITH LINKS, AND/OR PHOTOS, AUDIO OR VIDEO

  • Report, research and write a feature-length article
  • Gather information from a variety of sources
  • Follow a structure: a vivid lead, nutgraph, and a series of points or events that tell a story
  • Supplement it with online features (ie links, photos, audio, video)

5. OTHER IDEAS?

You may have other ideas of how best to tell your story. Pitch it.

  • story idea
  • original reporting
  • quality of the presentation
  • effort
