What’s the difference between WordPress.com and WordPress.org

Here are some basic differences between WordPress.com and WordPress.org


  • Free
  • Must have .wordpress.com in URL (unless you pay for upgrade)
  • @ 70 Themes
  • Dozens of plug-ins/widgets
  • Can’t modify CSS (unless you pay for upgrade)
  • Can’t upload audio or video directly (unless you pay for upgrade)
  • Used by average people
  • You must stick with basic template…but it does a lot things for a free web site.


  • You buy your own server space and domain name from web host.
  • Install WordPress as your Content Managment System
  • Thousands of themes to choose from (some free, some pay)
  • Thousands of plug-ins/widgets
  • Can modify HTML and CSS
  • Can upload audio and video directly
  • Used by average people and news orgs
  • Can use WordPress to make a site look exactly as you wish

WordPress.org which has a lot of tutorials to get you started. I also recommend educhalk.org a great resource for learning how to build a Web site using WordPress.org.
