The iconic “Hope” poster of Barack Obama was the center of a recent legal battle over copyright and fair use.

Shepard Fairey, the artist who created the iconic HOPE poster, admitted he used an Associated Press photograph of Obama as inspiration, but argued his artistic transformation of the image is protected under the principle of “fair use.”

Mannie Garcia, the Associated Press photographer who took the photo of Barack Obama, argued he owned the rights to the images.

These interviews aired on NPR’s Fresh Air with Terry Gross on February 26, 2009.
